UCLA is stamping a football victory on its legacy of football history, marking the 100th anniversary of the game’s first game with a championship over USC.
The Bruins played their first game against the Trojans on Nov. 18, 1915, and went on to win the first Pac-10 championship the year after.
UCLA’s team was named for the famed football coach, Eugene “Buck” Schramm, and the team’s motto was “The Bruins are Coming.”
The team is led by current USC head coach Clay Helton, who won a national championship at UCLA with the Bruins in 1971.
Helton is the first head coach in school history to win a national title at UCLA.
He’s the only coach to win at least two national championships and two Pac-12 titles, including the last four in the Pac-15.
The game marked the Bruins’ second-ever championship, joining their previous national championship victory over Arizona State in 1984.
USC had previously won the title in 1947.
UCLA won the regular-season series by one point with a 23-3 win at Cal on Sept. 9, 1916.
The win in Fresno is the seventh in 10 tries against USC, and Helton’s first against the Cardinal.
Helton is 8-0 against the Bruins at home, including wins over USC and Arizona State.
Helson has a 6-2 record against USC at the Coliseum, winning six of his last seven games.
The last time UCLA won a bowl title was back in 2011, when Helton beat UCLA 31-20 in a Rose Bowl rematch.
UCLA also beat USC on the road for the first time since 2006 in the Rose Bowl.
Heltons only season at UCLA was a two-year stint from 2012-14.
The bowl game marked UCLA’s second trip to the Rose Cup since the team moved to L.A. in 2000.
UCLA played its first game in the Los Angeles Coliseum in 2020, with Helton playing for the Bruins from 1996-2000.
The first bowl game for UCLA was in 2002.
The NCAA announced Thursday that the Los Angles Coliseum will host the bowl game at 6:30 p.m.
ET on Saturday, Nov. 19.
The game will be televised on CBS and will be the first game to be televised in Los Angeles since the 2009 Rose Bowl and the 2014 Sugar Bowl.
The Trojos will be hosting a bowl meeting against Texas Tech on Saturday.
